You’re probably reading the title of this post and saying to yourself, ‘that’s a really long drive.’
We didn’t just keep driving from Arizona to South Dakota! We stopped in Colorado but it wasn’t that exciting, only because we didn’t do anything!
Originally, we planned to stop and see a friend which was about 2 hours East of where we stayed but didn’t make it in time. But that’s okay! We got to Golden in decent time and just had one of those nights where all we wanted to do was veg out and not be out. It worked perfectly. We stayed at a La Quinta Inn and if you’ve ever stayed at one of those, they are always nice hotels.
BEFORE that, we were traveling from The Four Corners Monument into Colorado.
I believe we even drove through New Mexico for a short period. I was seriously so excited to be driving through Colorado. I mean, I am not a huge fan of snow or anything but I realized how much I love the mountains. While living in California, we were able to go to the mountains a few times and I just loved it up there. Colorado is absolutely beautiful! My photos don’t even do it justice.
Driving through, it was just beautiful to see. We stopped a couple times to just look out at the mountains and hills. And it was great to just be driving through and around the mountains. As we were driving, I kept telling Jonathan, “Are we at the mountains yet!?” We could see them in the distance and every time, I would think we were getting closer!
Are we at the mountains yet?!
On the way, we stopped at a little place in FairPlay, CO called The Hungry Miner. It was this little diner ( we clearly love diners ) and there wasn’t anyone in there. The guy that was serving us was SO friendly and just kept telling us to make ourselves at home. He told us to let the kids run around if we wanted to since he knew we were traveling long distances. We just loved it. And the food was great too.
**I looked up the restaurant to see where it was located, and apparently it’s been closed since we were there!**
On our way to South Dakota, we passed through Wyoming. Another one of those states that Jonathan said is probably the only time we would be there. But one of the coolest things as we were in Wyoming is…
The kids saw snow for the first time!
It was the coolest and cutest thing to see them looking at the snow. A knew what the snow was because he is obsessed with Frosty the Snowman and he kept telling us,
“Look at all the snow!” and “I want to see more snow!”
So, eventually we decided to make a pit stop and just…throw snowballs. Our dog, Violet, also had never seen snow before. She took off running in a field and was jumping around in the snow too. They all loved it! It’s always great to see how your kids react to new things and I love making memories like these. Little did they know, they were going to see a lot more snow soon!
Another cool thing about Wyoming ( yes, there are cool things in Wyoming lol), is that at one of the rest stops, there was a playground! I don’t think I remember ever seeing a rest stop with a full playground there. It was perfect for us to get some movement in and the kids were able to get some energy out as well. All rest stops should have these!!
I think that was the last stop before we made it to our destination in South Dakota!
I also forgot to mention: This trip was pretty neat for us. We thought we were going to need to pull out all of the toys for the kids. All of them. We thought we would need to have electronics ready to go because they weren’t going to have fun. But little did we know, the playing with some sticks and dirt at a rest stop was just perfect for them!
Here are some more photos!
